ATV, Buggy or Jeep in Cozumel: Which Machine, and Who Is Not Allowed On

Off-road is the second business of this island after snorkelling: 46 trips from €35.08, carrying 967 reviews between them. What that number hides is how similar they are. Most of them drive the same unpaved tracks through the interior to the same place – the Jade Cavern, which operators describe as the largest cenote on Cozumel – and differ mainly in what they bolt on afterwards.

So the choice is not really which tour. It is which machine, how long, and whether you are allowed to drive at all.

The licence rule that catches people out

This is the single thing most worth reading before you book anything in this category.

You need a driver’s licence, and you have to bring it. The operator of the most-reviewed off-road trip on the island lists the licence under what to bring, and states that all drivers must hold a driver’s licence and be at least 16 years old. Under-16s and anyone without a licence ride as passengers in a double ATV, accompanied by an adult.

And there is a long exclusion list. The same operator lists the trip as not suitable for children under 8, pregnant women, people with back problems, heart problems or high blood pressure, people with recent surgery or pre-existing medical conditions, and wheelchair users. Where a tequila tasting is included, that part is 18 and over.

That list is not decoration. An ATV on a rutted limestone track shakes you for an hour at a time, and a back that is merely grumpy at home will not enjoy it.

The three machines, and what actually separates them

ATV – you drive, you get dirty. One or two people per machine, no roof, no doors. This is the cheapest way in and the most physical. The ATV ride to Jade Cavern with beach club access and lunch is the reference point: 4 hours 30 minutes, €69.39, 4.5 stars from 209 reviews. It includes pickup and drop-off at the meeting point, bottled water, lunch of chicken or beef fajitas, 30 minutes of shore snorkelling and 30 minutes with kayaks. The village entry fee at El Cedral is not included and is collected in cash at the gate.

Shorter and cheaper: an off-road adventure to Jade Cavern with a stop in El Cedral is 2 hours 30 minutes at €47.61, 4.1 stars from 68 reviews, and an ATV adventure with caverns, ruins and transfer the same length at €65.14, 4.4 stars from 67 reviews. If you would rather end on the coast than in the jungle, the seashore adventure with a Maya cenote runs 4 hours 30 minutes at €70.27.

Buggy – you drive, with a roof and a seat beside you. Two seats, a roll cage, somewhere to put a bag. It is the compromise for couples where only one wants to drive and neither wants to eat dust for four hours. The private buggy tour with lunch and snorkelling is 5 hours at €78.18 with 4.4 stars from 178 reviews – the second most reviewed thing in this category.

Jeep – somebody else drives. The decisive difference, and the reason the price jumps. The private jeep tour with lunch and snorkelling is 5 hours at €184.47, 4.5 stars from 71 reviews. The five-hour private caves and ruins tour at €96.63, 4.6 stars from 75 reviews, is the better value of the two and goes further inland.

If lunch is going to include a beer, the jeep is not a preference, it is the only option.

Read the reviews here more carefully than elsewhere

The star ratings in this category are scattered: among the trips with at least ten reviews the range runs from 2.9 to 4.6, and four of them sit below four stars. Same island, same tracks, same cavern: the difference is the operator, the state of the machines and whether the group gets rushed.

At the cheap end, a 4x4 ATV trip with snorkelling and beach club starts at €35.08 for 3 hours 30 minutes but has only five reviews behind it. A handful of reviews is not a verdict either way. Sort by recent and read what people say about the dust, the wait and the size of the group.

Could you just drive there yourself?

Mostly not, and this is where the honest answer disappoints.

The routes these tours use are unpaved tracks, and several of the sites sit on private land with a gate and a fee. A hire car gets you round the island on the made road – Punta Sur, the east coast, San Gervasio – but not onto the jungle tracks, and hire agreements frequently exclude unpaved roads entirely. Read that clause before you turn off a made road, not after.

Fitting it into a port call

The 2 hour 30 minute trips are the ones that reliably fit a short call with time left over. The 4 hour 30 minute and 5 hour versions eat the day, and they start with a transfer from the terminal to a base in the interior, which is not counted in the duration you booked.

Go in what you are prepared to throw in a laundry bag. You will come back the colour of the track, and every operator here says the same thing about shoes: closed, and ones you do not mind ruining.
