Water Sports in Cozumel: Fifteen Minutes, Thirty Minutes, or Two Hours

Cozumel sells two very different things under the same heading. One is snorkelling, which is the island’s main business and costs from €12.53. The other is what most people mean by water sports: the motorised, the harnessed and the helmeted, sold in blocks of fifteen minutes to two hours, mostly from beach clubs on the sheltered west coast.

The second group is much smaller than the first, and the prices per minute are a different order of magnitude. Both of those are worth knowing before you stand at a counter on the beach.

The short, fast ones

Jet ski. A 30-minute jet ski rental with beach access and a locker is €69.39 and holds 4.8 stars from 11 reviews. Half an hour is the standard block here, and it is genuinely half an hour – the clock starts when you get on. If you want longer and with a guide, a jet ski tour with snorkelling, food and drinks runs 1.5 hours at €251.23, and it carries a single review. That is not a criticism of the trip, but one review is not evidence.

Parasailing. Parasailing with beach access and a locker is €69.39 for 15 minutes, at 4.6 stars from 6 reviews. Fifteen minutes is the flight, not the visit; budget an hour or more at the beach around it, which is what the day pass in the title is for.

Do the arithmetic before you book either. Fifteen minutes of parasailing costs more than a four-hour reef trip. That is not a reason to skip it – it is a reason to pick the one you actually want rather than doing both because they are there.

Breathing underwater without a licence

Three ways, in ascending order of commitment.

SNUBA. You breathe from a hose fed by a raft on the surface, so there is no tank on your back and no certification. SNUBA in Cozumel is €57.10 for 2 hours. Its rating is 3 from a single review, so treat the listing as untested rather than bad.

Helmet diving. You walk on the seabed wearing a weighted helmet with air pumped down to it. Your head stays dry, which means glasses stay on and hair stays dry, and you do not have to put your face in the water at all. Of everything in this article, it is the one that most often suits people who do not consider themselves water people.

And the one that is not a sport at all

The Atlantis submarine is 2 hours from €79.06 at 4.7 stars from 142 reviews – the most-reviewed listing in this whole group by a wide margin. It descends well past snorkelling depth with a licensed crew, and nobody changes clothes. For anyone who cannot swim, will not swim, or has an ear that objects, it is the only way on this list to see the reef at depth.

What the review counts tell you

Compare the numbers in this article with the ones on a snorkelling trip: the reef boats carry ratings from hundreds or thousands of guests, while most of the jet ski, parasailing and SNUBA listings sit in single or low double figures.

That is not a warning about safety. It is a warning about information. With eleven reviews, you cannot tell a good week from a good operator. Read what there is, look at when the reviews were written, and prefer the listing that publishes what is included in writing.

Practical things that cost people money

• Ask what the price covers. “Beach + locker” in a title means a day pass is bundled in. Some listings include it and some charge at the counter.
• The marine park fee is separate wherever you enter the water inside the national park. Ask the operator whether your activity falls inside it.
• Lockers exist for a reason. You are getting on a machine in a swimsuit. Anything you carry, you carry at your own risk.
• November to February, the nortes arrive. When a cold front pushes down the channel the port can close, and when the port closes nothing motorised leaves the beach. Ask about the cancellation terms, not about the forecast.
